From Family Trade to Trusted New England Craftsmanship

In 1959, twelve-year-old Tom Trento started learning the tile trade from his father, Frank, in Rome, New York. Those early lessons shaped a lifelong dedication to quality and detail.

After graduating high school, Tom joined the tile setters’ union in Central New York, where he completed a formal apprenticeship. His determination quickly earned him respect in the trade. Along the way, he taught friends who shared his passion for tile work. Many of them later brought their skills to New Hampshire and Vermont, creating connections that would help the business grow years later.

BUILDING A FUTURE IN NEW ENGLAND

By the early 1980s, Tom often traveled to New England for subcontracting jobs with those same friends. The consistent demand for skilled tile installers convinced Tom and his wife, Jackie, to move to southern New Hampshire in 1988. They wanted to build a business of their own, grounded in quality work and personal service.

FOUNDING CAPITAL TILE & MARBLE

In 1989, working out of a small two-stall garage with two pickup trucks, Tom and Jackie founded Capital Tile & Marble Co., Inc. Their goal was simple: to offer dependable, high-quality tile installations with a personal touch.

Soon after, their son Todd, nephew Greg Paquette, and a small group of trusted tradespeople joined them. The company earned a strong reputation for craftsmanship and reliability throughout southern New Hampshire and northern New England, handling both commercial and residential tile projects.

GROWTH AND FAMILY INVOLVEMENT

In 1992, Tom’s eldest son, Vincent, joined the business as an estimator. His attention to organization helped streamline daily operations while preserving the company’s hands-on approach.

As the team grew, experienced professionals like Steve Tripp and Ron Lacey became important parts of the company’s success. Together, they built a reputation for quality work and dependable service that still defines the company today.

THE START OF RUMFORD STONE

As Capital Tile gained momentum, the Trento family saw a need for a dedicated stone fabrication division. In response, they launched Rumford Stone, expanding their services to include custom countertops, vanities, and other stone surfaces.

Rumford Stone carried the same standards of precision and customer care that built Capital Tile’s reputation. Over time, it became one of northern New England’s leading stone fabrication shops, serving homeowners, designers, and builders. The connection between Capital Tile and Rumford Stone gave clients a complete, coordinated experience for both tile and stone projects.

FOCUSING ON RESIDENTIAL WORK

As home design trends evolved, Capital Tile began focusing on residential installations. This shift allowed the team to apply their technical expertise to detailed, design-centered projects. The company now partners with homeowners, designers, and builders throughout New Hampshire to create elegant kitchens, baths, and living spaces.

From custom backsplashes and spa-style showers to classic flooring, every installation reflects careful workmanship and thoughtful design. The close partnership with Rumford Stone continues to benefit clients who want both tile and stone completed by the same trusted team.

FAMILY LEADERSHIP AND LEGACY

After decades of leadership, Tom and Jackie retired in 2015, passing ownership to their sons, Todd and Vincent. Under their direction, both Capital Tile and Rumford Stone continue to operate with the same core values: integrity, craftsmanship, and pride in every project.

The companies remain family-owned and operated, blending long-standing skill with modern tools and materials. Their teams continue to invest in training, innovation, and strong customer relationships to ensure the work always meets the highest standard.

LOOKING TO THE FUTURE

Now entering its third generation of family involvement, Capital Tile & Marble Co., Inc. continues to grow while staying true to its roots. What began in a small garage in New York has become a trusted name across New England.

Together, Capital Tile and Rumford Stone remain committed to quality, reliability, and craftsmanship that stands the test of time.
